Thank you, and some thoughts

The sign I held Monday morning offered convincing evidence that I was wise to abandon my artistic aspirations at the age of 15.

But some years later I had to scribble an appreciative message and bring it to Marine Drive near the Lions Gate Bridge. Lots of smiles, thumbs up and horn-honking ensued. I will be giving thanks for the foreseeable future for the faith West Vancouver placed in me as its next mayor. This is a privilege of a lifetime.

I launched my campaign at the end of March and spent nearly seven months listening and learning, gaining insights and garnering ideas, so that I could present a plan that would earn the support of the community, in the hope I can earn its trust.

I am honoured for the opportunity to serve and thankful for the confidence invested in me. I look forward to working for the next four years with three experienced Councillors (Linda Watt, Scott Snider and Peter Lambur) and three fellow newcomers (Tim Webb, Lee Lau and Jaime Webbe) to Council, along with municipal staff, advisors and residents.

I believe residents have asked us to pursue fiscal discipline, community renewal, and broader consultation, and more open and accountable government.

I want to commend fellow candidates Mayor Mark Sager and Councillor Sharon Thompson for their community service. Their commitments ran deep and West Vancouver is grateful for their dedication. I also want to express appreciation to outgoing Councillors Christine Cassidy and Nora Gambioli for their service of the municipality.

I am thankful to my wife and family, my campaign team, the many hosts of meet-and-greet sessions, volunteers, canvassers and donors in their support of my candidacy. And I owe this opportunity to the residents I met on the SeaWalk, on the streets, at their homes, and in the cafes and restaurants.

In these months of campaigning, complete strangers became friends and demonstrated confidence. But I want to be clear that I will be a mayor for all West Vancouverites. Whether you supported me or another candidate, whether we agree or disagree, I want you to know that your views matter and your concerns will be heard. Every voice is welcome at the table.

The campaign was about earning your vote. The next four years will be about earning your trust.
