West Vancouver Mayoral Candidate Kirk LaPointe Promises Transparency, Fiscal Discipline and Community Consultation

In a detailed conversation with West Vancouver Community Stakeholders, mayoral candidate Kirk LaPointe shares his vision for a more transparent, financially responsible, and community-focused municipal government ahead of the upcoming civic election:

LaPointe’s campaign will prioritize listening before making promises. LaPointe criticizes the current council for what he describes as a lack of meaningful public consultation. Drawing on his decades-long journalism career, he says accountability, accessibility, and openness would define his leadership style, including regular public engagement sessions and clearer communication with residents.

A major focus of the discussion is West Vancouver’s financial outlook. LaPointe warns that the municipality is heading toward unsustainable tax increases due to reserve spending, operational inefficiencies, and costly projects. He pledges to review spending immediately if elected and identify efficiencies within the first 30 days of his administration while protecting essential infrastructure and community services.

The interview also explores several major community concerns, including the controversial pay parking rollout, housing density, traffic congestion, seniors mobility, village revitalization, and regional governance through Metro Vancouver. LaPointe argues that projects such as pay parking fail because of poor consultation and rushed implementation, saying future initiatives must include stronger community input and clearer long-term planning.

On housing, he supports “gentle densification” while preserving neighbourhood character. He also stresses the need for more seniors housing, improved mobility options, and accessible healthcare services within West Vancouver.

LaPointe concludes by encouraging greater civic participation, saying municipal government will increasingly shape residents’ daily lives and long-term community sustainability.
